Great tips for Setting up a Garage Sale

How to set up and run a successful Garage Sale

First you want to set the date and time it is always best
to do a garage sale on two days if you can do it! The best days are Fridays and
Saturdays as those the days most people have off. It is also best to put clearly
in your ad when your garage sale will be open but expect early shoppers even you
list NO EARLY SHOPPERS trust me they will come.

Second plan what items you are going to putting in the
garage sale try to keep a lists to help keep yourself more organized and also so
you know what to mention in your garage sale ad

Now it is time to figure out where you will have the garage
sale! If you plan to have it in your front yard you will want to make sure you
have NO holes in your yard so no one trips or gets injured, that you yard is
clean and free of debris including cracked or broken sidewalks. If you plan on
using a garage make sure you clean out your garage so your customers do not feel
confined and not able to browse through your garage sale stuff. You will also
want to make sure all chemicals or anything harmful is put away because you can
expect a lot of children at your garage sale. There are many places you have
your garage sale such as your carport, garage, yard, or porch.

Advertising is a BIG part of successful garage sale! I
always recommend taking out a garage sale ad in your local paper and make sure
if you house is hard to find that you put in good directions.. Next is word of
mouth, let you neighbors and family and friends know you will be having a garage
sale you will be surprised how many people will want to throw in items in your
sale or even help you out. Also be sure you have PLENTY of garage sales signs
all around your neighborhood and major road ways. Be specific in your
advertising telling them address, dates and times of your sale.

Here are some BIG ticket items that are usually great hits
at any garage sale:

Toys
Childrens Clothing

Baseball Cards

Tools

Antiques of any kind

Bottles such as old alchol bottles or soda bottles

Luggage

Holiday items such as Christmas items

Lawn mowers and camping equipment

Books of all kinds

Dishes and Kitchen items

Have a large quantity of items to sell, a big variety. And don’t be afraid to
drag out those outgrown items, old dishes, two-of-a-kind items you don’t really
need and generally "clean house". You’ll find the money in your pocket is better
than all the clutter in the house.

Homemade items are very popular. If someone in your household sews, then sew
up aprons, doll clothes, dolls, stuffed toys from scraps of material lying
around. You’ll make use of those scraps taking up space and make money too!
Fresh produce such as tomatoes, green beans, corn, fruits, etc. will also sell,
if you should have a garden overflowing.

A great tip to displaying your clothes is to string up a
clothes line between two trees and hang your clothes on hangers! This will allow
your customers and easy to way to view and try on your clothing.

Make your garage sale look organized by grouping like
minded items together such as one table for Kids Clothes One Table for Kids
Toys, One Table for Kitchen and Home Décor, One table for knick knacks and so
on.

Remember also people are out looking for bargains not
overpriced items so price your items accordingly! You do not want to overprice
items so that your customers go down the street to the next garage sale. Also
post a sign that says items are negotiable to encourage your customers to
negotiate with you.

You can even take advantage of space under tables these
make great places to show off large items in boxes or even shoes or board games.
You can use colorful signs to draw attention to items under your tables.

Make sure your prices are clearly visable so you are not
getting a hundred people asking you how much is this and how much is that! You
can either mark a whole table one price of you if  are selling clothing you can
put a sign on the table like

Shirts $1

Jeans $2

Undergarments and Pajamas $1

Socks $.50 and so on

Be sure you have electric outlets nearby your tables so
customers can try out any electrical items you have forsale such as toasters,
TV’s and more. When setting out books make sure the titles of the books are
facing your customers and that the books are in the general directions and
stacked nice and neatly to make it easier for your customers to view the titles
of each book.

BE READY! Be ready to meet any customer as soon as the
paper hits the street, because some will come before the sale and before you
even get ready to start the next day! In addition to placing an ad in the paper,
place signs at points where people will see them. Some laundromats have bulletin
boards on which you can place notices. Advertise all you can. Work word-of-mouth
all you can. If employed, place signs on your company’s bulletin boards. Use the
WEB to advertise your garage sale too. You can advertise your sale on
